Micheal Mac Aoidh Sings “Sìne Chalum Bhàin”

For the first time this year, the U.S. National Mòd featured a prescribed song competition, in which a song was assigned by the adjudicator. Competitors had to sing the prescribed song to qualify for the song finals.

For the men, Paul McCallum chose “Sìne Chalum Bhàin,” a 19th Century love song by Niall Mac Leòid of Skye. This is Micheal Mac Aoidh’s performance from the Mòd, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010.

Micheal won this competition, and went on to win the Gold Medal. Meal a naidheachd!

Tha ‘n rìbhinn òg is àille cruth

‘S a’ bhail’ ud thall a’ tàmh;

Tha làmh ‘s a deud cho geal ‘s an gruth,

‘S a gruaidh mar ròs fo bhlàth;

Bho shàil a buinn gu bàrr a cinn,

Gu fallain, dìreach, tlàth,

Mar lilidh fhìnealt’, mhaiseach, mhìn,

Tha Sìne Chalum Bhàin.

Biodh càch an geall ‘s an gaol le cuid

Aig am bi crodh ‘us bàrr,

Chan iarr iad buaidh is fheàrr na sud,

Ma gheibh iad saibhlean làn;

Ach chan e cuid ‘chuir mise am bruid,

‘S a thug air falbh mo chàil,

Ach mar tha m’inntinn trom fo chìs,

Aig Sìne Chalum Bhàin.

Bu ghrinn leam luinneag bhinn a guth

Air madainn chiùin ‘s a’ Mhaigh;

Tha ‘còm cho geal ri eal’ an t-sruth,

‘S i cuireadach ‘n a gnàths;

Tha ‘sùilean caomh, ‘s a gàire caoin,

‘Ga m’fhàgail faoin gun stàth —

Chan òr no nì a leòn mo chridh’,

Ach Sìne Chalum Bhàin.

Ach ‘s eagal leam gu’m bheil mi clì

‘S gu’n deachaidh m’ inntinn ceàrr.

Chan fhaigh mi fois air muir no tìr,

Chan eil mi tinn no slàn;

‘S chan eil ach dithis anns an sgìr

A bheir dhomh sìth gu bràth;

‘S e ‘n dàra h-aon dhiubh sin a’ chill

No Sìne Chalum Bhàin.
