Gerchak, Luce Sing Way to Top of Ohio’s Mòd nan Lochan Mòra

The Mòd season in North America officially got under way with the eighth annual Mòd nan Lòchan Mòra — the Great Lakes Mòd or Ohio Mòd in Wellington, Ohio, June 25-27. Mealaibh ur naidheachd dhan a h-uile neach a bh’ann!

This year Susan Luce and Stan Gerchak were the gold medal winners at Mòd nan Lochan Mòra, held at the Ohio Scottish Games in Wellington, Ohio.

Sìne Anna MacKay and Angus Allan Macdonald were the adjudicators, Sìne for music and Angus for Gaelic.

Sìne is very active in fiddling and singing circles in Scotland, a gold medal winner at the National Mod in Scotland, and has just come from running the 2010 Inverness Mòd at which there were 700 competitors.

Angus is very active in Gaelic circles and has competed many times at the National Mòd in Scotland, competing in quartets and with the Largs Gaelic Choir for which he is the Gaelic tutor.

The events began on Friday, with a poetry and storytelling competition. This year Cathleen MacKay won first place in storytelling, while Michael MacKay won first place in poetry.

The song competitions took place at the Scottish games on Saturday, with Susan Luce, Anne Alexander and Erin Park competing for the women’s medal. Erin is last year’s U.S. National Mòd gold medalist.

After the adjudicators graded all the competitions, Susan Luce placed first, Anne Alexander second, and Erin Park third.

In the men’s singing competitions, Stan Gerchak placed first. He and Susan shared the championship medals.

After the competition was completed the singers and judges demonstrated waulking at the game’s performing arts venue, thanks to Bonnie Gordon, who arranged the time and venue.

The Mòd ended with a workshop on Sunday morning. Sìne and Angus taught five songs, three of them òrain mòra, one love song and a puirt.

The Mòd Chair, Frances Acar, thanks the officers and trustees of the Ohio Scottish Games for all their help in preparing for the Mòd, the judges for providing such excellent feedback and adjudications, and the competitors for all their hard work in preparation. The next regional Mòd in North America, the North Carolina Provincial Mòd, takes place at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games next week. Gura math a thèid leis a h-uile duine a bhios anns na farpaisean an siud.

The U.S. National Mòd takes place Sept. 10-12 in Ligonier, Pa. See the posts below for registration information and materials!
