The Mòd Season Begins

Believe it or not, in just about four months we’ll be gathering in Ligonier, Pa., for the U.S. National Mòd. But there’s plenty of Mòd activity to enjoy before September, starting next month with the eighth annual Ohio Mòd – Mòd nan Lochan Mòra 2010.

The Ohio Mòd will take place at the Ohio Scottish Games, Friday, June 25th to Sunday, June 27th, 2010. There will be two adjudicators this year — Sìne Anna MacKay and Angus MacDonald. Sìne Anna is a Mòd Gold Medalist from Scotland and as such, she attended the ACGA Mòd in 2008. She is currently organizing the Inverness Mòd in between choir and fiddle practice and performances. She has had much experience adjudicating at Mòds and will be the music adjudicator.

Angus has sung in many Mòds and is a member of the Largs Gaelic Choir. He has had experience as a Mòd co-adjudicator in Scotland and will be the Gaelic language adjudicator.

The competitions begin Friday with poetry and storytelling, with song competitions beginning Saturday morning. There will also be plenty of time to enjoy the Ohio Games, concerts and cèilidhs.

Contact Frances Acar at for more information.

Angus MacDonald has sung in many Mòds and is a member of the prestigious Largs Gaelic Choir. He has had experience as a Mòd Co-adjudicator in Scotland and will be our Gaelic language adjudicator.

Both Sine Anna and Angus will teach the workshop on Sunday morning. Angus will judge the poetry competition and Sine Anna will judge the Storytelling.

Next up is the North Carolina Provincial Mòd July 10, which follows the 2010 Grandfather Mountain Gaelic Song and Language Week July 4-8.

The U.S. National Mòd takes place Sept. 10-12 this year, and Paul MacCallum of South Uist will be our adjudicator. Check here for more information on the competitions, lodging, events and workshops soon.

Then comes the grandfather of all Mòds, the Royal National Mòd in Scotland, this year in Caithness. Mòd Ghallaibh will be held Oct. 8-16, and we  some of our competitors will attend and participate this year — one frequent U.S. Mòd gold medalist in particular.

That’s not the end, however. In November a number of us will head north to Ottawa for the second Mòd Canada.

We hope to see you at many of these events, and especially the U.S. National Mòd. Gabhaibh òran agus togaibh fonn!
